McGill Students Reject Israel Divestment

McGill University students rejected a divestment motion against Israel.

Sunday’s vote of the Students’ Society was 276 against the nonbinding motion and 212 in favor. McGill has some 23,000 full-time undergraduate students.

The motion called on the Montreal university’s administration to stop doing business with companies “contributing to the continuation and profitability of the illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories.”

The motion was put forward by the campus group Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights, or SPHR.

Critics including McGill’s Israel on Campus group linked the motion to the worldwide Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, while supporters said it did not reject Israel’s right to exist or advocate a cultural or academic boycott.

In October, an SPHR motion condemning Israel’s “siege” of Gaza was tabled indefinitely.

I hope you appreciated this article. Before you go, I’d like to ask you to please support the Forward.

At a time when other newsrooms are closing or cutting back, the Forward has removed its paywall and invested additional resources to report on the ground from Israel and around the U.S. on the impact of the war, rising antisemitism and polarized discourse.

Readers like you make it all possible. We’ve started our Passover Fundraising Drive, and we need 1,800 readers like you to step up to support the Forward by April 21. Members of the Forward board are even matching the first 1,000 gifts, up to $70,000.

This is a great time to support independent Jewish journalism, because every dollar goes twice as far.
