Schumer: ‘Trumpcare Would Send Us Back To Dark Ages’

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described House Republicans’s effort to repeal and replace Obamacare as a plan that would make health insurance worse and drag women back to medieval times.

“Trumpcare will make health insurance in America measurably worse in just about every way and likely leave more Americans uninsured,” the New York senator said, according to The Hill news site. “With respect to women, Trumpcare would send us back to the Dark Ages.”

House Republicans unveiled their proposal on Monday night, and it would dismantle crucial parts of Obamacare, offering tax incentives for Americans to purchase healthcare on the open market while abolishing the mandate to buy insurance and paring back an expansion of Medicaid that insured millions of poorer Americans.

The package would also deny federal funding to Planned Parenthood, which receives dollars from the central government by offering contraceptive and other non-abortion services to women on Medicaid.

Republicans are trying to expedite the legislation’s passage, hoping to start deliberating over it in committee this week. But there’s a long road to passage and the president’s desk, with dissension in conservative ranks over the design of healthcare reform and the almost-universal opposition of Democrats to the proposal.
