Democrats Seek To Co-opt Ivanka’s Paid Leave Push

Ivanka Trump has made child care and paid family leave part of her White House agenda, but Democrats could pull the rug out from her, with their own legislation on the issue.

According to Politico, Washington Democrat Patty Murray will soon unveil a proposal to give subsidies to working- and middle-class families to defray the cost of child care.

Known as the Child Care for Working Families Act, the bill will be rolled out Thursday, with attendance from Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer and House minority leader Nancy Pelosi expected. The proposal is part of the Democrats’ “Better Deal” opposition proposals for economic growth and support to the middle class.

“This bill is the Democrats’ benchmark on what a national child care plan should look like,” an unnamed congressional aide told Politico, anticipating that the proposal would become a major focus of Democrats.

Ivanka Trump has tried to carve out a role for herself on women’s issues, speaking about this last year at the Republican National Convention and meeting with Republican congressmen about child care and family leave. But so far, the administration has not advanced any plan to defray child care costs or provide family leave to Americans.
