Heart-Shaped Challah From Hot Bread Kitchen

My food worlds collided this week when I went online to order my weekly haul from , the Israeli-owned CSA (consumer-supported agriculture program)-type thing I subscribe to, and found — among the mostly-local fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and artisanal culinary treats — a gorgeous-looking heart-shaped challah from Hot Bread Kitchen.
I contacted the bakery, which puts a portion of its profits into educating its workforce of immigrant women, and found that mini versions of the holiday bread, meant to serve 2, are on sale for $6 a piece through February 14th at greenmarket locations around NYC.
The bakery also makes chocolate-cherry rolls, which sound romantic indeed: Chocolate dough is studded with semisweet chocolate chunks and tart dried cherries. The bakery recommends warming the rolls a bit so the chocolate becomes gooey, and serving them for breakfast or dessert…
Be still my heart.
