The Commentary on Steve Cohen’s Win Continues
Weeks after Tennessee State Senator Steve Cohen won the Democratic nomination for the state’s ninth district congressional seat, negative sentiment about his win is still coming from the African-American community.
The Tri-State Defender, a monthly African-American newspaper, has run an article about the race, as reported by local TV station WMCTV. Rev. Dwight Montgomery with the SCLC reportedly expressed regret that the crowded field of African-American candidates did not winnow itself, saying “there’s no way that any of them could have actually believed that one of them would emerge with so many African American’s in the race.” He added, “I see the shame and tragedy in the fact that there is a divided African American Community who cannot afford to be divisive.”
