Adelson Could Shift Support to Romney
Jewish-American casino magnate Sheldon Adelson may shift his support from Newt Gingrich to Mitt Romney in the race for the White House, according to a report in The New York Times.
Adelson, the world’s 16th wealthiest person, and his wife Miriam donated $10 million last month to Winning our Future, the pro-Gingrich super PAC. Much of this was apparently used to fund an aggressive anti-Romney publicity campaign.
According to the New York Times report, however, several Adelson associates believe the billionaire would be willing to give even more to Romney, should he eventually emerge as the Republican nominee against U.S. President Barack Obama.
Adelson has been in personal touch with both candidates recently, meeting Gingrich at a get together of Gingrich supporters at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, which Adelson owns. Two weeks ago, Adelson held a telephone conversation with Romney, in which the two discussed, among other things, Romney’s campaign messaging. Adelson associates described the conversation as “cordial.”
