Adelson Will Give $10 Million More to Gingrich

Casino and hotel magnate Sheldon Adelson reportedly has plans to give another $10 million to a group supporting Newt Gingrich for the Republican presidential nomination.

The donation to Winning Our Future, an independent committee, or Super PAC, that is run by former Gingrich associates, will reportedly be delivered in the coming days, CBS News reported citing an unnamed source close to Adelson. CNN reported the same, also citing an unnamed source close with knowledge of the donation.

The infusion of cash to the Gingrich campaign comes two weeks before the Super Tuesday primary vote in 10 states on March 6: Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia.

The donation would bring the amount Adelson and his wife have spent to support the Gingrich campaign to $21 million.

Super PACs can raise unlimited sums from corporations, unions and other groups, as well as individuals, and indirectly support a political candidate. They cannot by law coordinate with the candidate’s official campaign.

Sheldon Adelson, chairman and CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corp., is worth more than $21 billion, according to Forbes magazine. He is a major giver to Birthright Israel, which provides free 10-day trips to Israel for Jews aged 18 to 26.
