20,000 Gather To Remember Yitzhak Rabin

About 20,000 people gathered in Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square to pay tribute to the memory of slain Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

The rally was organized by Israeli youth movements and was held under the banner of “Remembering the murder – fighting for democracy.”

The event was held Saturday night in the same public square where Rabin was shot and killed by right-wing nationalist Yigal Amir on Nov. 5, 1995.

The rally was attended by hundreds of members of the National Religious movement. Bnei Akiva Secretary General Danny Hirschberg spoke at the rally despite opposition from some members, including the youth of Itamar, who sent Hirschberg a letter decrying his decision saying Rabin had wanted to dismantle the West Bank settlement and that his policies had led to the death of at least 20 of the community’s residents, including five members of the Fogel family, whose children participated in the youth group.

Saturday night also marked the anniversary of the death of the Jewish foremother Rachel. More than 70,000 reportedly gathered at Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem Saturday night.
