In the season premiere of the hit ABC hospital drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” one of the main characters, Cristina, a Jewish-Japanese doctor played by Sandra Oh (left), extols the virtues of sitting shiva in an effort to help one of her fellow surgeons get over the death of her patient-turned-fiancée.
Mourning may have been the theme, but network executives had reason to celebrate: The show, which was moved from its comfortable Sunday night perch to a fiercely competitive Thursday night slot, beat out the September 21 premiere of “CSI,” last season’s top-rated drama.
