Dear Editor,
The Forward recently published an article about billionaire Sheldon Adelson’s “generosity.” I felt compelled to respond.
Tell me how much he is going to get from the recent emergency stimulus packages — and then let’s discuss how generous he is.
Tell me how much he pays in federal and state taxes — and then let’s assess how generous he is.
Tell me how big are his charitable contributions supporting right-wing causes to Israel — especially the tax deductible ones — and then let’s discuss how generous he is.
As a public service during this pandemic, the Forward is providing free, unlimited access to all coronavirus articles. If you’d like to support our independent Jewish journalism, click here.
And finally, tell me that his support for his workers will go on as long as the crisis continues — not just a few months — and how he is going to shame all his other billionaire friends to do the same.
And while you’re at it, ask him how workers who don’t have a rich employer are going to survive — then we’ll be able to measure how generous he is.
Sincerely,
Toby T. Gati

This is a moment of great uncertainty for the news media, for the Jewish people, and for our sacred democracy. It is a time of confusion and declining trust in public institutions. An era in which we need humans to report facts, conduct investigations that hold power to account, tell stories that matter and share honest discourse on all that divides us.
With no paywall or subscriptions, the Forward is entirely supported by readers like you. Every dollar you give this Passover is invested in the future of the Forward — and telling the American Jewish story fully and fairly.
The Forward doesn’t rely on funding from institutions like governments or your local Jewish federation. There are thousands of readers like you who give us $18 or $36 or $100 each month or year.
