Tel Aviv — It has long epitomized the Jewish state’s superiority complex toward Jews who live abroad. Tel Aviv’s Museum of the Jewish Diaspora was theoretically about the Jews living dispersed around the globe, but its narrative had them all ending up in Israel.
Now, with a big jolt of funding, the museum has announced that it will completely overhaul its exhibitions in an effort to put Diaspora Jews on an equal footing with those in Israel. The state-funded museum, which opened in 1978, will soon begin a $25 million project to expand its footprint, redevelop the exhibitions and reopen in 2012 with what essentially will be a new museum, including a new name: the Museum of the Jewish People.
One of the main things that will be changed in the new museum is the old-fashioned Zionist narrative, which expected the Diaspora to disappear as Jews immigrated to Israel. Currently, the Jewish past is dealt with in five sections on Diaspora history. The sixth section deals with the end of the Diaspora in the establishment of the State of Israel. It’s a reality that has not come to pass, and the new museum will reflect that.
“The idea of the museum’s founders was that it was the history of the Jewish Diaspora, which started with the destruction of the Temple and ended with the return to Zion, the last chapter in Diaspora history,” Avinoam Armoni, CEO of the museum, told the Forward. “But 31 years on, we know that there is still life, and thriving life at that, in the Diaspora, meaning we need a different approach.”
Located on the Tel Aviv University campus, the museum houses permanent exhibitions, a genealogical database and photo archives. Abba Kovner, leader of the Vilna Ghetto uprising, conceived it, and when it opened it was considered a sign of the growing intimacy between Israel and Diaspora communities. The detailed redevelopment plan was announced at a meeting of the international board of governors at the end of June. The redevelopment will go forward without the museum closing.
At the new museum, there still will be exhibitions on the establishment of the State of Israel, but there also will be major displays on contemporary Jewish life outside Israel. An international advisory board, comprising members of communities across the world, will be involved in planning them.
“There will be no endpoint to the exhibition,” Armoni said, drawing a contrast with the current exhibition. “It will start with Abraham and Sarah from the Bible, and there will be no end — it will continue to develop as the story of the Jewish people is still unfolding.”
The plan will be bankrolled by the government of Israel and the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, the central body for Holocaust restitution claims. Donors also will contribute, including a fund run by the Russian-born, Israel-based oligarch Leonid Nevzlin, chairman of the museum’s international board of governors.
The funding represents a change of fortunes for the museum, which has spent much of the past decade in financial crisis — to the extent that on several occasions, there have been rumors of impending closure. The museum today has the feel of an institution that has lost its former glory; many of the features that were cutting-edge when it opened no longer work, due to poor upkeep.
The museum’s fortunes turned around in 2005, when the Knesset passed a law making the museum a national institution and ensuring it an annual budget from state coffers. Around the same time, Nevzlin became involved and became a major funder.
The changes at the museum represent the latest stage in an evolution in Israeli thinking about the Diaspora. Until the 1970s, Zionists of all political shades tended to be committed to the principle of shlilat ha’galut, translated as “negation of the exile.” The Israeli school curriculum promoted the idea.
In the 1970s, the language used was softened. People began to refer less to the galut, or “exile,” and more to the tefustot, or “Diaspora.” Nevertheless, there was a widespread belief that the future of the Jewish people lay in Israel and not in the Diaspora, and it was in this context that the Diaspora Museum was established.
Haifa University sociologist Oz Almog, an expert on contemporary Israel, told the Forward that the mindset today could not be more different: “Ask Israelis now what they think about Jews coming from countries where they aren’t persecuted, like the U.S. and Britain, to live in Israel, and they’ll say, ‘Those who do are nuts.’”
Museum insiders say that nowadays, using even the word “Diaspora” in the museum’s name is considered chauvinistic, because it puts foreign Jews in a single boat even though their cultures are diverse — hence the new name.
“There was a sense that “Diaspora” is a pejorative term,” said Mark Kurs, director of the visitor center.
There has been a notable lack of opposition to the changes. Even pressure groups that fight to strengthen Zionist identity in Israel, such as the hawkish Institute for Zionist Strategies, which produces leagues of tables telling how well different lawmakers score in terms of “Zionist legislation activism,” welcomed the plan.
“Zionists don’t expect every Jew to move to Israel today,” institute founder and president Joel Golovensky said.
It is not only the Israel-centric mindset that will be challenged in the new displays. Women and Sephardim, who were given short shrift in the old displays, will be given more prominence in the new designs — as will non-Orthodox religious movements.
Hebrew University sociologist Vered Vinitzky-Seroussi said the fact that it has become commonplace for Israelis to move abroad, either permanently or for a stint, makes it contradictory for their families to look down on Diaspora Jews. More than this, she said that while Zionist ideology traditionally preached that Jews are vulnerable in the Diaspora, today, following two intifadas and various other attacks, “many people are not so sure that Israel is the safest place for Jews.”

It's true that Israel is not exactly the safest place for Jews. Moreover, it's true that Jewish life continues in the Diaspora even after the birth of Israel. And, yet, the Zionist perspective of Jewish life is still absolutely true. The Diaspora communities are very weak. The Jews no longer speak their own languages, a clear indication that there is no Jewish society that stands in its own right. Jewish education in the Diaspora is a sad story. Most Jews receive no Jewish instruction at all. Most importantly, one's Jewish identity is no longer the primary identity in life. There is always another non-Jewish peoplehood identity (the American identity, for example) that is much more substantial. In Israel, on the other hand, the Hebrew language expresses the reality of a Jewish society that has its own culture - a Jewish society for which Jewishness is the overwhelming identity, and Jewish education is universal.
The changing of the Diaspora Museum message is not a reflection of accepting the Diaspora as an equal drama in today's Jewish world. The drama of Israel and her Hebrew culture obviously outshines any Diaspora community - and there's no serious Jewish educator who would tell you otherwise. It is self-evident that Diaspora children are brought to Israel for a mere ten-day visit in order to strengthen their Jewish identity. I haven't yet heard the news about a parallel project of sending Israeli children for ten-day visits to the Diaspora for the purpose of showing them an alternative way of expressing Jewish identity. The changing of the Diaspora Museum is more an expression of politeness (PC). It certainly is an expression of Israeli self-confidence: The story of the Diaspora can be told without fear of casting doubt as to the obvious centrality of Israel and her Hebrew culture in the story of today's Jewish people.
The arguement is already settled. Most Jews in the American diaspora are assimilating. In my New York upstate county there are about 10,000 Jews. Despite all the urgent issues facing Jews there is NO community dialogue all these years. The leaders do not lead, the members remain asleep and my efforts to spark a dialoge fall on deaf ears. Over 80% vote Democrat regardless of who is running. Except for the orthodox minority the rest do not exhibit the qualities for long term spiritual survival. And most of those are actually proud of their growing detachment from genuine Judaism. The 'liberal' Jews do not seem to notice, the high assimilation, low birth rate and intermarriage. After WWII we had more U.S. Jews than today and we are the only ethnic group in the u.S. to stagnaate in numbers. The secular Jews lack the spiritual vitality to survive for the long term.
Of course, there are zionist mindsets, especially among some of the Ortdoz that still prevails among those who narrowly define Jewish people by their observance of Halakha.
I for one am not moving to Israel, because as a Jewish woman,I do not believe that anyone has the right to push me to the back of the bus and beat me up if I refuse to go there. I refuse to live in a country where the rabbanut makes sure that women cannot get gets unless someone gets paid under the table, and who make believe, with their lies, that there are no agunot, when in fact, there are almost 1,000 whose husbands will not give them gets, and they play around with semantics about who is or isn't an agunah.
And last but not least, why would I live in a country that calls its Holocaust survivors Sabon and Sabonit, and which holds back 66,000 bank accounts and has a prime minister that demands complete control of the claims conference while he tells its board of directors that survivors aren't entitled to a free lunch. With 80,000 survivors under the poverty line in Israel who do not get basic needs met, and with a government whose policies toward survivors generally stinks, why would I
want to live in such a country?
Why would I want to live in a country where I, a daughter of Holocaust survivors, has to prove I am a Jew?
My aunt and uncle survived Aushcwitz, they were in their mid-80s, and the Interior Ministry called them liars. So they didn't make aliyah.
BTW, using the West Bank as a toxic dump doesn't help either.
Some exhibition of ethical behavior by the government in Israel would be nice.

This is a simplistic and inaccurate reading of the message and narrative of the Diaspora Museum as it was originally conceived. It was created primarily for an Israeli audience which had been brought up with a chauvinistic narrative about the creation of the State of Israel as an evolutionary climax of the Jewish people. In an era in which officers in the army and representatives sent abroad were forced to Hebrewtize their last names (i.e. give up signs of their East European, Moroccan and other identities) and in which music of North African Jews was never heard on the radio, one should not underestimate how revolutionary the Museum's message was. It was not about Zionism and even elicited complaints by many that the Diaspora was being glorified. As guides in the Seminar Department in the early 1980s, we told an amazing story of 2,000 years of a people that managed to survive and maintain its identity in spite of its dispersion and frequent persecution. We sent people to study areas to find the origins of those family names, emphasized the interconnectedness of Jews all over the world, and tried to instill a sense of pride and respect for the diversity of Jewish life wherever it existed. I believe those things are - or at least should be - part of the 'New Zionist Message' and of the overhauled Diaspora Museum as well.
David Fischer - Why do you feel that you have to explain to us why you wouldn't live in Israel? You bring up a whole list of complaints, leaving the impression that these shortcomings are the background for not living in Israel. Both of your countries, the USA and Australia, were founded by the total destruction of the native civilizations and the seizure of their land. This destruction and theft have never been rectified - and never will be. The truth is that you want to live in Australia, and that's it. No philosophy, no complaints, no moral questions. So, you don't want to live in Israel. You also wouldn't live in Israel even if all your complaints would be satisfactorily answered.
How ironic that the civilization that commemorated the destruction of the Temple in the Arch of Titus is now remembered as a historical relic in a Jewish museum.

I am simply happy to hear that the museum is at last going to enter the 21st century. When I was there last summer I was appalled at the condition of the facility and the utterly passe technology, media presentations, etc.
Throughout history Jews in large numbers, though by no means all, have preferred the "fleshpots of Egypt" to the Manna of the Desert. That was true for the majority that preferred Babylonian exile to independence in Judea and proliferation throughout the Roman Empire while the Second Temple stood. But it was to Israel that the masses of DPs fled, the only "home" that would take them in while the vast majority of democratic, civilized Western countries, including the USA, Canada and Australia kept their doors locked to them but not to many Nazi war criminals. History seems to have established that characteristic of the Jewish people and we have to deal with it. Let us hope that there will always be enough of the Jewish people to prefer leading an independent existence in a Jewish country even though it be a constant struggle to maintain it.
As is my want, I go to my town library to read the New York Review of Books and last week a read an excerpt from Tom Snyder's new book "The Real Ignored Holocaust". His premise is that the carnage wrecked on the Jewish Communities of Eastern Europe and the Ukraine and Beyla Rus was more catastrophic and destructive than what had transpired in West European countries because there they rampaged through destroying town after town of men, women, and children. As a result there is a sparseness of victim witness.
This premise made sense of the Jewish Culture Fair held in Poland organized by non-Jews to celebrate what once was...lo we have become as iconic as the American Indian, reminders of what had been and can never be restored.
It is better to be established with Isreal above than the State of Isreal below.

Set me as a seal upon you heart, is this not what the G-D of Israel has told us generation after generation?
Seals usually inscribed with the owner's name. Do we not belong to our G-D? Seals were used in the ancient world to identify, authenticate and protect the contents of documents and vessels. We are that vessel or ark. The document is the law...being the will and desire of our G-D upon our inward parts ( our hearts and minds). In Psalms 51 it is written....the desire that G-D wants for us to be placed on our inward parts, so that Truth will let us know Wisdom in the hidden part. This hidden part is the true foundation.
So it was with Noah in the lower world. noah was the sacred covenant below corresponding to that above, and hence is called "Man of the earth". The inner meaning which we learn from this is that Noah had need of an ---ark---with which to become---united--.
As it is written..... "And I will establish my covenant with thee:, and before the covenant was establish with him he did not enter the ark, as it is written, "And I will establish my covenant with thee and tou shalt come into the ark." So his ark represented the Ark of the Covenant, and Noah and the ark together were a symbol of the Supernal pattern. And since this covenant above --bought forth and produced, so Noah below also bore generations of the earth. That is why we say "These are the generations of Noah."
We read in Psalms 2 that David was brought forth, into the family of G-D to be called a Son of the Living G-D. The Spirit of G-D made David but the breath of the Almighty brought him forth into the kingdom of G-D as a son. David, became a full Man, made in the mirror image of G-D. Prov,X: 25 "The Righteous one is the foundation of the world: and the earth is established thereon, for this is the pillar that upholds the world. So Noah was called Zaddik (rightous) below. All this is implied in the words ....Noah walked with G-D, meaning that he never separated himself from G-D, and acted so as to be the true copy of the supernal ideal, a "Zaddik the foundation of the world" an embodiment of the world's covenant of peace.
Noah found favour in the eyes of G-D. Perfect he was in his generations this refers to his descendants; he perfected them all, and he was more virtuous than all of them. "He was perfect" indicate that he was brought forth circumcised. Circumcised was from above. Abraham, "Walk before me and ---be perfect....." Be perfect means be circumcised, when we turn back and find the kingdom of G-D within and walk before G-D perfect. We must enter in the ark, the hidden part, the true foundation, for Truth to let us know Wisdom and walk with G-D and be perfect. David tells us how in Psalms 101.
In the early 1930s my mother wanted to go to Palestine from her town in Poland along with some of her girlfriends, but my grandmother would not let her, she being the apple of her eye. Needless to say, my grandmother, and my mother's brothers and my mother's first child and first husband, and the rest of her family were all murdered by the Nazis in their escape attempt from the ghetto. My mother was saved by some Christian farmers hiding her in a pit with 4 other Jews. I was born less than two years after the war in a DP camp in Bavaria.
When I emigrated to Israel in the early 1980s and wanted to marry, I had to go to the Rabbinate and PROVE that my mother was a Jew in order to get married under Jewish law. As it happened, I had my "get" (bill of divorcement) from my first marriage, so it didn't take too long, just a few weeks. At the time it was exasperating, but now I realize it was the right thing. Someone has to keep a record of "Who is a Jew" or else who will do so? Can just anyone claim to be a Jew and expect to get the right to immigrate and be married under Jewish law? Mind you, civil unions have been legal in Israel since the very beginning, so there is no need to get married for tax or other purpose. You can live "common law." There is no state marriage in Israel, and now I support that stand. Israel is not America. Being a Jew means being the member of a TRIBE and in any tribe, there are shamans or tribal leaders who determine who is in, and who is not.
American Jewry may assimilate itself out of existence through intermarriage or by other means it sees "right in it's own eyes" but I am happy that at least in the Jewish state, even if it was an annoyance at the time, that someone keeps score as to who belongs in the tribe, and who doesn't have the automatic right to live on Jewish soil. I did not get permission from the Native American Indians to live on their soil, but then, those nations were broken and their rights marginalized. The Palestinian Arabs would have a good case against Jewish immigration if Israel allowed anyone simply claiming to be a Jew to come and settle. Someone has to set the standard as to "Who is a Jew." There is nothing racist about it. Every tribe has its own tribal laws.
Being a Jew has nothing to do with observing mitzvot or following Halacha. The only thing you need to be a Jew is to be able to prove your mother was a Jew. That's it. If your mother was a Jew when you were born, and it can be proved by proper documentation or acceptable witness testimony, then you are a Jew, whether you break every commandment, or observe them. The only other way to be a Jew is to undergo a purposely very harsh, almost forbidding and unwelcoming long period of learning and observation by the Rabbinate, who in the end will accept or not accept your bid to join the tribe. The tribe does not seek new members, nor is there any advantages to becoming a Jew. And anyone who thinks there is, is automatically disqualified from becoming one. Nor does the tribe stop anyone from leaving, by the act of undergoing the ritual of baptism or otherwise officially joining a different religion or nation. Nobody is forced to become or remain a Jew. Those who want to escape, by all means, goodbye. That does not mean one can necessarily escape the racial discrimination by some others if you happen to have facial or racial features deemed "Jewish looking."

For every thing that the Almighty has made in the lower world,' he said, 'He has appointed a fixed term and limit. He has appointed a time for light and for darkness. He has fixed a term for the light of the other nations who are now the rulers of the world; and a term for the darkness of the exile of Israel who are now subjected to their rule. And so there is a term for every purpose in the lower world.' The word--'eth (time) is the name of an angelic power charged to see that everything takes place at its appointed time.
It is written....Ps CXLVII 'G-D indeed takes pleasure in the righteous', he said, 'because they promote peace in the upper world and in the lower world, and cause the bride to join her husband; and therfore G-D takes pleasure in those that fear Him and do His will. Those that wait for His mercy are they who study the Torah in the night time and thereby become associates of the Shekinah, and so when the morning comes they wait for His mercy---for, as has been affirmed, sho so studies the Torah in the night time is looked upon graciously in the day time. So it is written...." By day the LORD will command His lovingkindness (or grace) for what reason? Because---"in the night his song is with me" Ps. XLII. The LORD takes pleasure in those that fear him.
'Who is like the LORD our G-D, that is enthroned on high, that looketh down low upon the heaven and upon the earth. Ps.CXIII. G-D raises Himself high above His Throne of Glory and does not reveal Himself to the lower world at those times when no rightous men are to be found in the world. Do you know a rightous leader be it male or female? Contrariwise, He "looketh down low" when rightous men are found in the world, as then Hedescends in His grade so as to meet the lower beings and to take the world under His providential care. But when there are not righteous men in the world, He ascends aloft and hides His face from mankind, and deserts them, inasmuch as the righteous are the foundation and the mainstay of the world. So why does mankind think one nation is better than an other nation? We are all blind, for the leaders are blind and they lead us into even deeper darkness every generation goes deeper in.
Do it is written...." For man also knoweth not his time; as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare, even so are the sons of mensnared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them". The expression "his time" refers to the ministering angel called "Time", who presides over each act that mankind male or female performs, and is referred to in the statement "He hath made everything beaufiful in its time". So they are "as the birds that are caught in the snare". Happy are those who in their time have turned and sealed G-D ways in their inward parts, (heart and mind) that Truth has let them know Wisdom in the hidden part were they praise in silence and G-D speaks in silence, were sins of mankind may not defile the true temple.
The temple of the lower world was destroyed, as it hinted in the verse....."The sun shall be darkened in his going forth" Is. XIII. "For that is thy portion in life": This alludes to the association of the sun with the moon, as it behoves us to bring the portion of mankind by which they may enter the world to come. Then the passage continues: "whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy strength; for there is no work, nor device nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest." This verse strikes one at first sight as surprising--- is mankind indeed free to do "whatsoever his hand findeth to do"? But neverthe less we must note the qualification in the phrase "do by thy strength"-----think the instrumentality of the higher soul of mankind, the soul that is brought forth into the family of G-D. For it is written. Job 33 The Spirit of G-D made me, but it is the breath of the Almighty that gives me life. The higher soul! The form is the strenght so as to gain the world to come. So much as mankind departs this world they can do no more, and it is useless for them to say, I will go and perform good acts, for assuredly, there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom I can not obtain here. The lie and deceit that has been seeded in all of mankind from the first. Only G-D is good, and only through G-D strength going from us can mankind do good. The biggest lie we tell is to ourselves, when we say----we are good. We are nothing, dust to dust, ashes to ashes, spirit to Spirit for without the higher soul death comes to all. The Jew, is a holy child that has eyes to see and ears to hear and knows Truth and Wisdom, and who Father shines his face upon them, for they walk in the light of their G-D.

It is all so written in Jeremiah 31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the ---hand--- to bring them out----of the land----of Egypt; ----which my covenant they brake, although I --was-- an husband unto them.
The day comes in ever generation of mankind. Note the word ---days---. In Ps. 51 It is written....Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me know wisdom.
Is this the house of Judah? For it is written.....Jer.31 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those ---days,----saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their G-D, and they shall be my people.
The will of G-D will be done, even if mankind goes against him.
Is your mother a Jew? we are all made Jews, for our mother is the Spirit of G-D that made us. For it is written .....Job33 The Spirit of G-D made me...... But are we brought forth, born from above? Yes many are born below. Who are born form above, who are brought forth form their father house below and brought into the House of G-D, and given a new name, who ??
For it is written.....Job 33.....but the breath of the Almighty gives me life. That life is in the house of G-D, now brought forth into the promise land that was given to Abraham, that was taken from his father house, and taken from his native land into the kingdom of G-D and given a new name. For it has been written and it is a Declared Decree of G-D for all to obey and be brought forth. Ps.2....I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my son; this ----day----have I brought you forth. or beggoten you or birth you. The higher soul. That is why it is written Isaiah 9..... For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders........ The child----male or female is now brought forth into the form of man an son of G-D. Now in the mirror image of the One True G-D that in unity gave them everlasting live in them, the G-D of Host.
