Prepent Day 1: What Do You Thirst For?

An old Jewish legend tells of a rainmaker at a time of drought who draws a circle around himself, declaring that he will not step outside until the rains quench the people’s thirst. The rains arrive. Today, each of us casts a circle around ourselves, taking on a 40 day intentional journey to focus on what it is we truly thirst for, how we want to spend the days ahead in careful inventory of our life. What can we learn towards becoming better people in the year ahead? I invite you to join us. Take time today to draw a circle of intention around yourself and ask your heart: what is my deepest thirst?

PREPENT 2017/5778 is Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie’s annual forty day journey into the new year with daily reflections for contemplation and return to center. This year’s blog presents an original artistic collaboration with Jacqueline Nicholls.

It’s our birthday and we’re still celebrating!

This week we celebrate 129 years of the Forward. We’re proud of our origins as a Yiddish print publication serving Jewish immigrants. And we’re just as proud of what we’ve become today: A trusted source of Jewish news and opinion, available digitally to anyone in the world without paywalls or subscriptions.

We’ve helped five generations of American Jews make sense of the news and the world around them — and we aren’t slowing down any time soon.

As a nonprofit newsroom, reader donations make it possible for us to do this work. Support independent, agenda-free Jewish journalism and our board will match your gift in honor of our birthday!

Support our mission to tell the Jewish story fully and fairly.
