100 Years Ago in the Forward
Two sisters, 18- and 19-year-old Rebecca and Annie Abrams, were sitting in a Philadelphia park, relaxing and talking with a friend, when suddenly they were attacked by a group of hobos. Although there were numerous people milling about, no one offered help when the Abrams sisters called out for it. Furious, the Muslims poured into the Jewish quarter and began attacking. The Jews of the quarter defended themselves, and the battle lasted an entire day. At that point, leaders of both the Jewish and Muslim communities held a meeting to put an end to the fighting, but Muslims attacked again the following day.

I have come to teach you how to be free — free of the burden of the white man. We are calling for unity of colored people throughout the world. Only then will we rule America and deal with the white man as necessary.” Roy Wilkins, leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People,

An era in which we need humans to report facts, conduct investigations that hold power to account, tell stories that matter and share honest discourse on all that divides us.
With no paywall or subscriptions, the Forward is entirely supported by readers like you. Every dollar you give this Passover is invested in the future of the Forward — and telling the American Jewish story fully and fairly.
The Forward doesn’t rely on funding from institutions like governments or your local Jewish federation. There are thousands of readers like you who give us $18 or $36 or $100 each month or year.
