100 Years Ago in the Forward
It has been said that New York City’s Jewish bums are worse than its gentile bums. In a way, this is true. Twenty-five years ago, when the neighborhood still had saloons on the corners, a Jew couldn’t pass by without getting smacked or insulted by a drunken Irishman. And now we have our own bums and delinquents all over the East Side. But how are they worse? Even the drunken Irish bums had respect when a woman walked past. But the Jewish bums don’t care; they yell out crude comments and make catcalls, even at young Jewish girls walking by. These delinquent youths have no respect for anyone, young or old. What will become of these young Jewish hobos? Only time will tell.
75 Years Ago in the Forward
B.Z. Goldberg, a journalist writing for the Yiddish daily Der Tog, published an article accusing the Forverts of suppressing material from a speech given recently by socialist leader Baruch Charney Vladeck at the Socialist Farband convention in Cleveland. But Goldberg is either mistaken or an outright liar: A complete report was published in the Forverts the same day that a similar report came out in the Tog. It may be that Goldberg is trying to do a “job” on the Forverts, but he can pull the wool over his readers’ eyes only so much: The evidence is in the old issues in black and white, for all to see.
50 Years Ago in the Forward
Reports out of Cairo indicate that the Egyptian capital has become a center for escaped Nazis and that a number of important figures from the Hitler government have made their homes there. These include Nazi doctors who conducted torturous experiments on Jewish prisoners, as well as important higher-ups in the Nazi SS. The report also notes that many of these escaped Nazis are now serving in a variety of roles as functionaries in Gamal Abdel Nasser’s government. Nasser’s prison service is allegedly run by an ex-Nazi, as are a number of government departments.
