Gadhafy Killed as Libyans Seize Holdout Town

Libya’s ruling former rebels say they have captured the hold-out town of Sirte, and reports say they killed ex-leader Moammar Gadhafy.

The now-governing National Transitional Council said it overran the final opposition in Sirte, long known as a Gadhafy stronghold, on Thursday after fierce fighting raged for days, according to The Guardian

A military council told CNN that Gadhafy had been slain in the town, but that report could not be confirmed. Horns blared and celebratory gunfire burst into the air in Tripoli.

“It’s a great victory for the Libyan people,” said Libyan Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam of the reports.

The council later reported Gadhafy was killed in the fight, the New York Times reported.

Gadhafy up to now survived the revolution that toppled his four-decade rule. The wily leader was alternately said to have fled to Venezuela or Zimbabwe, or holed up in his home town.
