1,000 NYC Kids to Bake Challah for Homeless

More than 1,000 Jewish children from across New York City will gather at the Grand Hyatt on Super Bowl Sunday to make challah — one loaf to take home and one for a family in need.

The 2nd annual Mega Challah Bake for Kids was organized by parents from across New York City, in partnership with schools, synagogues and community organizations.

“Our goal is to bring Jewish children of elementary and middle school ages together from every affiliation for a day of unity, pride and excitement,” according to the event page. “This project is not for any one synagogue, affiliation, Hebrew school or organization. It was started by a group of Jewish moms from varied backgrounds with one common goal: unity through challah.”

Each child will leave the event with his or her unbaked challah — gluten-free dough will also be available — and will be given the opportunity to make a second loaf to be donated to WIN, the largest provider of shelter and supportive housing for homeless families in New York City.

The challah bake takes place from 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. on February 5 at the Grand Hyatt New York in Midtown Manhattan. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. Registration is $15 per child.
