Russ & Daughters Makes Twitter Top 10 List
Twitter just released a list of the New York City restaurants that were most tweeted about in 2017 — and Jewish appetizing icon Russ & Daughters (@LoxPopuli) is No. 3.
That the 103-year-old stalwart has been embraced so thoroughly by social media is not entirely surprising. Owners Josh Russ Tupper and Niki Russ Federman, first cousins and the fourth generation of Russes to run the business, are aces at striking a balance between traditional and modern. In the past few years they’ve expanded beyond the smoked fish emporium on East Houston Street, opening two restaurants: Russ & Daughters Café on Orchard Street and Russ & Daughters at the Jewish Museum on Fifth Avenue.
Another New York institution, Danny Meyer’s Union Square Café (@UnionSquareCafe), made No. 1 on Twitter’s list. (Another of Meyer’s restaurants, Marta, is No. 8.)
Interestingly, the number of Twitter followers a restaurant has doesn’t necessarily influence how often people are tweeting about it. If it did, Momofuku (@momofuku), which has a whopping 96,700 followers, would have taken the top spot. Union Square Café has 8,571. And Dan Barber’s acclaimed Blue Hill (@BlueHillFarm), which made the list at No. 6, has 19,600 followers.
There are more than 100 million tweets a month globally about food, according to Twitter.
Today’s announcement also included a list of the most tweeted food emojis of 2017, and, alas, the bagel was not among them.
