Nobel Ceremony To Honor Two Israeli Scientists
Two Israeli scientists will officially receive the 2004 Nobel Prize in chemistry December 10, during a Nobel Foundation ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.
Professors Avram Hershko and Aaron Ciechanover, researchers on the medical faculty at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, will be honored along with Dr. Irwin Rose of the University of California, Irvine, for their work in the investigation of how cells destroy unwanted proteins. Their findings have led to a new type of treatment for cancer. Both Hershko and Ciechanover have received research grants from the Israel Cancer Research Fund.
Hershko and Ciechanover are the first Israelis to win the Nobel science prize. They were informed of their honor in October.
The December 10 ceremony will be broadcast live on the Internet from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. EST on the American Technion Society’s Web page (www.ats.org).
