Prime Ribs: International Women’s Day at 100

Today is the 100th annual International Women’s Day, commemorating the achievements of women, past and present. This year’s theme: “Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women.”

To mark the occasion, The Guardian sheds light on the lived experiences of women around the world — including those who call Israel and Gaza home.

Who are the top 10 Jewish women in labor history? Anticipating the centenary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, which killed 146 garment workers — most of them young Jewish and Italian women — the Jewish Women’s Archive’s Jewesses With Attitude blog is profiling the Jewish women who had a transformative impact on workers’ rights legislation in America.

After designer John Galliano’s was caught on tape making virulently anti-Semitic remarks, Rachel Shukert, over at Tablet, looks into high fashion’s hateful legacy.

In Israel, the employment rate stands at 65% for Jewish women, but at just 19% for Arab women. Haneen Zoabi, a member of the Knesset Committee on the Status of Women, sees the statistic as emblematic of government-perpetuated inequities between Arab and Jewish women living in Israel.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, human rights activist Rebecca Lolosoli and Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg are among the dozens of impressive women who will take part in the second annual Women in the World Summit, organized by the Daily Beast. The three-day event, which begins on Thursday, includes a panel discussion with female reformers from the Arab world and a conversation between former secretaries of state Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice.

As you may have heard, a recent Sisterhood post in which high-profile editors responded to the dearth of female bylines in their publications garnered a whole lot of attention. Check out these pieces about it in New York magazine, Slate and The New York Obserer. Sisterhood contributor Elissa Strauss, the author of that now-famous post, was among the guests on our most recent Reporters’ Roundtable podcast, which you can find here.
