Air India’s first Boeing 787 Dreamliner landed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi on Saturday September 8th to join the air carrier’s fleet. In July, 500 Air India pilots ended a two-month strike over rights to fly the plane. The pilots demanded that their colleagues from former Indian Airlines not be trained to fly Dreamliners because they worried it could hurt their own career prospects on international routes.
India’s 13th president Pranab Mukherjee has been sworn in and given a ceremony at the presidential palace in New Delhi. Mukherjee inspected the guard of honour whilst former President of India Pratibha Patil and members of India’s parliament watched on. The position of Indian president has in the past been mainly ceremonial, but as it is unlikely that any party will win a majority in the elections in 2014, Mukherjee’s role may involve more political power. In the event of a hung parliament the president could have to make the decision on who would form the next government. Mukherjee is a top leader of the Congress Party, and resigned from his previous post as Finance Minister to enable himself to run for President.
