Filmmaker Mike Nedelman attends Colonel David “Mickey” Marcus’s memorial service and speaks to the veterans who fought alongside him in the war for Israel’s independence. Click play to watch these brave men recall the defining roles they played in Israel’s formation. This short video, the second in the series, is offered as a complement to writer Jonathon Kesselman’s multi-part story “Writing in My Father’s Footsteps.” Kesselman digs through the past to uncover his father’s involvement with the Machal, the volunteer Israeli Army. Check back next week for another video by Mike Nedelman alongside the fifth installment in Kesselman’s series.

a lovely video, thank you!
I will never forget how proud I was to be a Jew when I watched Kirk Douglas portray Col. Marcus in 'Cast a Giant Shadow.' Col Marcus was a true Jewish hero! I would love to get more information on him.
There is a lovely memorial to the Machal members and organization just off the main road from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Actually it's on the "Burma Road" that Marcus was instrumental in bringing about to end the Arab siege on Jerusalem. There are few other memorials and statues honoring the foreign volunteers who so greatly helped Israel during the war of independence.
