Protesting Trump, ‘1984’ To Screen In Theaters Around The World

References to George Orwell’s dystopian classic “1984” have proliferated since the inauguration of President Trump, at one point sending the book to the top of Amazon’s bestseller list.
Tomorrow, Al Jazeera reports, close to 200 movie theaters worldwide will screen Michael Radford’s film adaptation of the novel, originally released in — wait for it — 1984.
The initiators of the event, Dylan Skolnick of the Cinema Arts Centre on Long Island and Adam Birnbaum of the Avon Theatre Film Centre in Connecticut, decided to stage the international screening on April 4 as an homage to Orwell’s novel, in which protagonist Winston Smith begins keeping a journal in an act of defiance against the omnipotent state on that same day.
“No one is suggesting that we’re living in Orwell’s world. But the road to that world is people just becoming disengaged and allowing their government to do whatever it wants,” Skolnick told Al Jazeera’s Jillian Kestler-D’Amours.
“This is really designed to get people to be talking and discussing and active in the political conversation that is happening in America right now – and throughout the world, it turns out.”
