CUNY Angers Some With ‘Jewish’ Category
City University of New York has created a new faculty demographic category of White/Jewish in a report on its Demographic Action Plan.
The designation has angered some university faculty, both Jewish and non-Jewish, according to the New York Post.
The plan, issued last month by CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein, is to assist in boosting the recruitment and inclusion of minorities on the CUNY faculty.
Other minority faculty reportedly identified include African-American/black, Asian, White/Jewish, Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender, Hispanic/Latino, Individuals with disabilities, and Italian-American, according to the newspaper.
“In addition to a group organized for white faculty, some faculty expressed a strong affinity and need for a focus group comprised of Jewish faculty members. Such a group was assembled, and it contributed to the effort of gathering facts and opinions from a wide cross section of groups at CUNY campuses,” CUNY spokesman Michael Arena told the New York Post.
