Rep. Ben Cardin Picks Up Endorsement

Democratic Rep. Ben Cardin of Maryland got a boost today from The Washington Post editorial board, which praised his “proven competence, integrity and depth” as a legislator and endorsed him for U.S. Senate.

Cardin is in a close primary race for the U.S. Senate seat being left open by the retiring Sen. Paul Sarbanes. His main rival in the Sept. 12 primary wlil be former congressman and ex-NAACP director Kweisi Mfume.

A poll conducted for The Baltimore Sun in July showed Cardin leading Mfume, 32 percent to 28 percent, with a 4-point margin of error.

Either man would likely face a close general election contest against Republican Lt. Governor Michael Steele, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports poll, which shows Cardin leading Steele 47% to 42%, and Mfume leading the Republican 46% to 44%.

I hope you appreciated this article. Before you go, I’d like to ask you to please support the Forward.

At a time when other newsrooms are closing or cutting back, the Forward has removed its paywall and invested additional resources to report on the ground from Israel and around the U.S. on the impact of the war, rising antisemitism and polarized discourse.

Readers like you make it all possible. We’ve started our Passover Fundraising Drive, and we need 1,800 readers like you to step up to support the Forward by April 21. Members of the Forward board are even matching the first 1,000 gifts, up to $70,000.

This is a great time to support independent Jewish journalism, because every dollar goes twice as far.
