Scarlett Johansson And The Avengers Cast Are Raising Money For Hurricane Maria Relief

The Avengers are assembling once more to do some good—this time offscreen. As relief efforts pour in for Puerto Rico, including from Presidents Bush, Bush, Obama, Clinton, and Carter, Scarlett Johansson is taking charge of a staged reading of the theater classic ‘Our Town’ with fellow big-screen heroes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Mark Ruffalo.
Additional casting announcements are expected to include other members of the massive cast of the fourth Avengers movie. The special one-night event at Atlanta’s Fox Theater takes place November 6, directed by Kenny Leon, with all proceeds going to the Hurricane Maria Relief and Recovery Fund.
Before undertaking their quest to save the world (or to fight one another about how best to save it), Johansson, Downey, and Ruffalo spent some time under the hot stage lights. Downey and Ruffalo have both acted in Off-Broadway plays during the last several decades, while Johansson won a Tony in 2010 for her first-ever Broadway role in A View From the Bridge. Evans, on the other hand, has his Broadway debut coming up next, when he and Michael Cera star in the revival of Kenneth Lonergan’s Lobby Hero. Here’s hoping Cap doesn’t hang up his shield for good after making his mark on the great white way.
Playbill has Johansson’s statement about the sure-to-be super event: “It is a great privilege to be able to participate in whatever way I can, to provide some relief to those that are struggling to access even the most basic of human needs in the aftermath of this disastrous event. Please help me and my co-stars in coming together for an extraordinary, one-time-only evening to raise lifesaving funds for a devastated island and to help celebrate the true meaning of community with this unique reading of a great American classic.” Tickets go on sale October 23.
