Rabbi Elhanan ‘Sunny’ Schnitzer

“I never found a spiritual home (not for lack of trying!) until I met Rabbi Schnitzer and Bethesda Jewish Congregation. When my son (3 years old at the time) saw a Star Wars Pez collection in Schnitzer’s office, the rabbi encouraged him to check them out. He scrambled up into the big desk chair on more than one occasion throughout the years (and became a bar mitzvah two months ago). My daughter (now 20) lists Schnitzer in the top three people she would go to if she couldn’t talk to me. I surely didn’t feel that way about my rabbi when I was a young adult! When my husband died unexpectedly three years ago, Rabbi Schnitzer was at my home within minutes and didn’t leave until I felt strong enough. He is a rock.”

It’s our birthday and we’re still celebrating!
We hope you appreciated this article. Before you go, we’d like to ask you to please support the Forward’s independent Jewish news.
This week we celebrate 129 years of the Forward. We’re proud of our origins as a Yiddish print publication serving Jewish immigrants. And we’re just as proud of what we’ve become today: A trusted source of Jewish news and opinion, available digitally to anyone in the world without paywalls or subscriptions.
We’ve helped five generations of American Jews make sense of the news and the world around them — and we aren’t slowing down any time soon.
As a nonprofit newsroom, reader donations make it possible for us to do this work. Support independent, agenda-free Jewish journalism and our board will match your gift in honor of our birthday!
