Three Get 25-Year Sentence for Synagogue Terror Plot
Three men who had plotted to blow up synagogues in New York City were sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The men, all Muslim converts, were arrested in May 2009, after being caught in an FBI sting operation. They were convicted in October 2010 of planting bombs at the Riverdale Jewish Center and the Riverdale Temple, both in the Bronx, and of planning to shoot down U.S. military aircraft using surface-to-air missiles.
The bombs and missiles provided by an FBI informant were disabled.
The sentencing of a fourth man convicted in the plot, who is Haitian, was delayed while he undergoes psychiatric exams.
The men could have faced life in prison.
Manhattan Federal Court Judge Colleen McMahon said in announcing her sentence that the government provoked the crime.
