Weprin and Turner Fight Down to Wire for Weiner’s Seat
With just days to go before a special election, Democrat David Weprin and Republican Bob Turner scrambled for votes in the fight to replace disgraced ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner.
Nervous Democrats lavished attention on the race, once considered safe, with everyone from Sen. Kirsten GIllibrand (D-N.Y.) to Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Cal.) chipping in on Weprin’s side, the New York Post reported.
Billionaire developer Donald Trump recorded a robocall to urge support for Turner in the election set for Tuesday.
Although polls are sketchy, the race appears to be close. The heavily Jewish district is considered safely Democratic, but Turner has gained traction with criticism of President Obama, especially his perceived lack of support for Israel.
The influential Rothenberg Report now lists the race as a toss-up, the paper said.
Weiner, who won reelection several times with ease, resigned in disgrace over inappropriate text messages he sent to women.
