Richard Spencer’s white supremacist compatriots are now raising money to identify the man who punched the “alt-right” founder in the face at an Inauguration Day demonstration in Washington, D.C.
“The ANTIFA thug who violently assaulted Spencer hid his face behind a mask, but some think they caught a glimpse of his face,” the appeal for donations posted by an unnamed person on WeSearchR. Antifa is a term for anti-fascist protesters. “There’s not much to go on — but let’s identify the ANTIFA criminal who punched Richard Spencer.”
On the morning of Wednesday, January 25, the page had raised nearly $5,000. Spencer has promoted the effort on his Twitter profile. The appeal on WeSearchR labels Spencer’s assailant a “domestic terrorist.”
Since the assault, Spencer has called for the creation of an ‘alt-right’ vigilante force and filed a police report. The incident has stirred wide discussion in the media, with a raging debate over whether it is acceptable to commit violence against white supremacists.

Did you know that only 2% of Forward readers donate to support our nonprofit newsroom? That 2% make it possible for millions to read the Forward without a paywall or subscription — removing any barriers to the full and fair Jewish story.
But while the Forward is free to read, it isn’t free to produce. Big stories — like deep dives into the antisemitism data, political scoops or reporting trips to college campuses — take months of research and fact-checking. All while we keep you informed of what you need to know each day.
