Senior Egyptian, Israeli Officials Meet in Cairo
An Israeli delegation of senior officials, including high ranking officials from the foreign ministry and the security establishment, held negotiations with senior Egyptian officials in Cairo Wednesday. Egyptian news agencies reported that the issue of locating a new embassy building was the focus of the discussions.
According to Egyptian reports, Israel provided several alternatives, presumably meeting the Egyptian requirements, which are currently being studied and reviewed by the Egyptians with the security of the Israeli staff being the their main consideration. Last week Israel evacuated the old embassy building that was attacked in September 2011 by an Egyptian mob.
Al-Ahram’s website reported that the discussions also included a possible prisoner exchange that would free an Israeli citizen, Ouda Tarabin, who has been locked up in an Egyptian prison for the past 12 years, in exchange for the release of 63 Egyptian prisoners.
On September 8, 2011, thousands of enthralled protesters broke into the Israeli embassy in Cairo. The protesters managed to bring down a part of the surrounding wall using steel rods, and began making their way into the lobby of the embassy complex.
