Eilat Rocket Has Little Effect on Tourism
The firing of a Grad rocket at Eilat late Wednesday night has not scared off tourists and there were no cancelations, foreign or Israeli, at local hotels yesterday. If the security situation does not worsen in the next few days, then the tourism industry expects no real effect on Passover holiday business.
Shabtai Shai, director of the Eilat Hotels Association, said there were no cancellations and guests were not fleeing after the Sinai-launched attack. There were those who called and asked how much it would cost to cancel at such a late date, but when they found out how much, they decided to come anyway, he said. But these were few in number. “Rockets fell, that is not good, but that is the type of thing we have gotten used to. People do not change their Passover plans for such things, especially as this was a solitary occurrence and not part of a series,” said Shai.
Hotel occupancy for the holiday is very high, 85%-90%. And hoteliers expect this to increase as many Israelis make last-minute plans.
