Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump says President Obama seems to support Muslims more than Israel.
Trump was seeking to clarify comments that appeared to suggest Obama was involved in some way in the Orlando mass-killing attack, which was carried out by an American-born Muslim.
The presumptive GOP standard-bearer denied making such an accusation, but did say that he believes Obama feels closer to Muslims than to the Jewish state.
“I was referring to the fact that at times President Obama seems more in support of Muslims than Israel,” Trump said in a statement to Bloomberg News.
Trump mentioned Obama’s support of the Iran nuclear deal as well as his touchy relationship with Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump has repeatedly embraced conspiracy theories about Obama and other rivals. He spearheaded debunked claims that Obama was not born in the U.S. and has repeatedly suggested that he is a Muslim, despite his highly public Christian faith.
After the Orlando attack, Trump raised eyebrows with his claim that Obama might grasp the terrorism problem “better than anybody understands,” which some took as a suggestion that the president somehow allowed the attack to happen.
