Forward Picks Up Journalism Prizes
The Forward won six Simon Rockower Awards for Excellence in Jewish Journalism, tying with the Los Angeles Jewish Journal for first place in the category of newspapers with circulations of more than 15,000. The awards were announced at this year’s annual conference of the American Jewish Press Association in Atlanta.
Boris Fishman won first place in arts and criticism for “The Flaunted Necklace,” a reflection on Jewish life under Muslim rule, and the Forward’s hefty “Genetics” supplement, edited by E.J. Kessler, finished first in the special section or supplements category.
Nathaniel Popper took second place for his profile of Tony Judt. Allan Nadler, director of Jewish Studies at Drew University, shared second place in news reporting with National Editor Ami Eden and reporter Steven I. Weiss for “Charedi Rabbis to Disavow Anti-Gentile Book.” For the second consecutive year, Art Spiegelman won second place for excellence in illustration and/or editorial cartooning for his year-long project, “In the Shadow of No Towers,” an autobiographical comic strip about his reaction to the September 11, 2001, attacks.
Editor-in-Chief J.J. Goldberg grabbed third place for excellence in editorial writing for “The Honey and the Sting,” a May 2, 2003, editorial preceding Israel’s 55th birthday.
It’s our birthday and we’re still celebrating!
We hope you appreciated this article. Before you go, we’d like to ask you to please support the Forward’s independent Jewish news.
This week we celebrate 129 years of the Forward. We’re proud of our origins as a Yiddish print publication serving Jewish immigrants. And we’re just as proud of what we’ve become today: A trusted source of Jewish news and opinion, available digitally to anyone in the world without paywalls or subscriptions.
We’ve helped five generations of American Jews make sense of the news and the world around them — and we aren’t slowing down any time soon.
As a nonprofit newsroom, reader donations make it possible for us to do this work. Support independent, agenda-free Jewish journalism and our board will match your gift in honor of our birthday!
