Israelis Launch Shoah Cartoon Contest

After hearing that the Iranian newspaper Hamshahri was promoting a competition for cartoons about the Holocaust, two Israeli artists, illustrator Amitai Sandy and actor Eyal Zusman, decided to launch an antisemitic cartoon contest of their own — open only to Jews.

“We’ll show the world we can do the best, sharpest, most offensive Jew-hating cartoons ever published!” Sandy said. “No Iranian will beat us on our home turf!”

The cartoons, which are due by March 5 (for guidelines and some early entries, see www.boomka.org), will be judged by the contest organizers and by Emory University historian Deborah Lipstadt, a leading authority on the subject of Holocaust denial. “Revisionist” historian David Irving sued Lipstadt for libel, a suit that Irving lost. After hearing of the of the contest, Lipstadt wrote to Sandy to say that she had experience with antisemitism and would be glad to serve on the jury.
