Academy Award Highlights
It wasn’t a big night for the Jews at this year’s Academy Awards.
The two Israeli documentaries, “5 Broken Cameras” and “The Gatekeepers” were shut out. The best director award didn’t go to Steven Spielberg for “Lincoln” (though the film did get the award for best production design), or to Benh Zeitlin for “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” Alan Arkin didn’t win for best supporting actor for “Argo.” The saving grace was Daniel Day-Lewis’ win for best actor, making him the first actor ever to win three best actor Oscars.
So this just leaves us to focus on some of the on-stage highlights, and — of course — on the red carpet fashion:
Even before the festivities began, Seth Rogen had to take to Twitter to disabuse fans of the mistaken notion that he — rather than Seth MacFarlane — was going to be hosting the Oscars.
William Shatner, as Captain Kirk, came back from the future to keep Seth MacFarlane from screwing up the show (by singing about actresses’ breasts, for instance). In the same sequence, Daniel Radcliffe and Joseph Gordon-Levitt danced a “High Hopes” soft shoe routine with MacFarlane.
Daniel Radcliffe was back on stage to present the award for best production design with a limping Kristen Stewart.
Barbra Streisand took to the Oscars stage for the first time in 36 years in a sparkly black and gold Donna Karan dress to sing “The Way We Were” in memory of the late composer Marvin Hamlisch.
Among the others remembered in the “In Memoriam” segment were Jack Klugman, Adam Yauch, Hal David, Nora Ephron , Robert Sherman, and Richard Zanuck.
Dustin Hoffman made Charlize Theron blush by complimenting her dancing skills (she danced during that Captain Kirk segment we mentioned above) as they introduced the award for the best adapted screenplay.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt uploaded to his Tumblr blog an adorable photo of Sally Field (who plays his mother in “Lincoln”) tying his bow tie for him in the limo on the way to the event.
We can’t help but wonder whether Adam Shulman, husband of best supporting actress award winner Anne Hathaway, had any concerns about the possibility of his wife having yet another awards show wardrobe malfunction. Proud husband Liev Schreiber was caught taking a photo of wife Naomi Watts in her stunning silver gown with his iPhone.
Daniel Day-Lewis looked uncharacteristically relaxed as he arrived with is wife Rebecca Miller.
Dustin Hoffman and wife Lisa gave each other a loving squeeze on the red carpet.

But while the Forward is free to read, it isn’t free to produce. Big stories — like deep dives into the antisemitism data, political scoops or reporting trips to college campuses — take months of research and fact-checking. All while we keep you informed of what you need to know each day.
