Marriage Equality Logos Get Jewish Twist
As the Supreme Court considers the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, Facebook users are seeing red. Gay marriage advocates are ditching their regular profile photos on the social networking site in favor of the Human Rights Campaign’s red equals sign.
The image has spawned numerous variations around the web — and some have a decidedly Jewish theme. Jews who think gay marriage is kosher are using strips of lox and pieces of matzo to form the equals sign and show their support.
The viral campaign raises interesting questions for journalists. Some have joined in, saying that marriage is a basic human right, akin to the civil rights struggles of the 1960s. Others see changing their profile pictures to be a public airing of opinion, incompatible with journalistic professionalism.
