NEW YORK (JTA) — Katz’s Delicatessen, a staple on New York’s Lower East Side since 1888, confirmed the news reported by the Forward in October, that it is opening its first outpost — in downtown Brooklyn.
Holidays come early to Breads Bakery, which is offering its festive challah (above) and other Rosh Hashanah items starting Friday.
After more than a century on the Lower East Side, is Katz’s contemplating adding a Brooklyn location?

For New Yorkers, the Lower East Side has long been the go-to neighborhood for classic Jewish food. In recent years, though, the area has lost some of its kosher cred, with the closing of places like Shalom Chai pizzeria and the soon-to-be-shuttered Streit’s Matzo Factory. Nonetheless, the historically Jewish area continues to draw hungry crowds.
