A Pushcart of Lower East Side Noshes
Can’t afford the lamb at Mirko’s or the seafood at Nick & Toni’s in the Hamptons? For those of us city dwellers, there’s the Noshcart.
The Noshcart is a care package that lets you enjoy the kosher delicacies of the Lower East Side at home, “all delivered to you in a unique, reusable miniature pushcart — what else?”
Customers can choose from two sizes. The Essex Noshcart, priced at $49.95, includes rugelach from Gertel’s Rugelach, an 83-year-old Lower East Side institution; pickles from Guss’ Pickles; bialys from the award winning Kossars; seven-layer halvah from Economy Candy; onion poppy Moon Strip Matzo from Streits, the world famous matzo factory, and G&M’s homemade savory potato knish. For the complete Lower East Side eating experience, go for broke and get The Delancey Noshcart for $79.95, a larger selection that includes a classic kosher salami from East Side Glatt Delicatessen and the guidebook, “The Lower East Side, Remembered and Restored.”
And you’re eating for a good cause. After years of planning and development, Joel Kaplan, the executive director of the United Jewish Council of the East Side, rolled out the Noshcart in an attempt to raise money for the LES Conservancy and to help rouse business for local merchants.
“The thought was to help the merchants down here who were suffering from 9/11,” Kaplan said. “But at the same time, people like the food and they can ship it to relatives.”
All net proceeds go to the LES Conservancy as well as to the Henry Street Hand Mailers, whom Kaplan enlisted to assemble the packages. This agency offers jobs and training to those returning to the work force.
“They are staffed by people who are transitioning [from welfare, unemployment or homelessness] back to the work force,” Kaplan said. “The staff is terrific, and they have it down to a science. So it was a good shiddach.”
Noshcarts can be ordered online at www.nycjewishtours.org, or over the phone by calling 877-PUSHCART.

I hope you appreciated this article. Before you go, I’d like to ask you to please support the Forward.
Now more than ever, American Jews need independent news they can trust, with reporting driven by truth, not ideology. We serve you, not any ideological agenda.
At a time when other newsrooms are closing or cutting back, the Forward has removed its paywall and invested additional resources to report on the ground from Israel and around the U.S. on the impact of the war, rising antisemitism and polarized discourse.
This is a great time to support independent Jewish journalism you rely on. Make a gift today!
