Jewish Boarding School Wins Eco-Award

The American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro, N.C., was recognized as a Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.

Cited for its environmentalism and science curriculum, the academy was among 78 public and private schools nationwide to be named Monday.

The school noted its geothermal energy system, which pumps water from deep below the ground to heat and cool its buildings, as a hallmark of its environmental stewardship. It claims the system cuts energy bills by up to 30 percent.

“Our mission and campus design have been dedicated to mentoring students about the importance environmentalism plays in their lives now and in their future,” said the academy’s executive director, Glenn Drew, in a news release.

The chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Nancy Sutley, said in a news release that the award-winning schools “take a green approach to cut costs on their utility bills, foster healthy and productive classrooms, and prepare students to thrive in the 21st century economy.”

The American Hebrew Academy is the only Jewish college prep boarding school in the country. It was founded in 1996 and now has 150 students.
