The Forward came away with three 2015 awards including a gold, at the Ippies award ceremony on June 2.
Kurt Hoffman, the Forward’s art director, won first place for “Best overall design of print publication.” Although the prize was judged on three specific nominated issues, the recognition was just reward for the beautiful compact print edition that he shaped as part of the Forward’s redesign last spring and that our print subscribers have been enjoying since April last year.
Josh Nathan-Kazis received a second place award in the Best investigative/in-depth story category for his FEGS story, “FEGS Execs Got Fat Payouts as Bankruptcy Loomed.” When the massive social services provider FEGS went bankrupt in early 2015, Nathan-Kazis showed how its executives had been successfully demanding significant financial settlements from the ailing not-for-profit over the previous months.
Outgoing Yiddish editor, Boris Sandler, came third in the video category. Competing against all videos in all languages, Sandler was beaten only by two outlets specializing in video and television. His History of the Forward Building is a nostalgic tour de force of our century-old spiritual home.

Hello, fellow Forward reader! I’m Joel Brown, a Forward reader and supporter for more than 15 years, and currently the chair of the board of directors.
I’m an avid Forward reader because it ticks so many of my essential boxes: excellent journalism, Jewish focus and diverse viewpoints. In today’s political climate, what I most appreciate is the Forward’s independence — made possible by the generosity of its membership.
The Forward is committed to bringing you unbiased, nuanced Jewish news. From my position as board chair, I see an exciting future as we expand our position as the definitive independent voice of contemporary American Judaism.
