Julia Ioffe to Lefties: Calm Down for a Minute About Trump
As liberals freak out over the inauguration of President Donald Trump, writer Julia Ioffe has a message for them: Do not get paranoid like Republicans eight years ago.
As the left hyperventilates about camps and fascism, I’d like to remind them of the right doing the same (but with socialism) 8 yrs ago.

It’s become a trope since the campaign that the new president might signal a rise in anti-democratic or even fascist tendencies within the American body politic. Ioffe think that’s akin to conservatives fretting that former president Barack Obama would impose socialism at the start of his agenda.
Obama never threatened to sue the press, encouraged violence at his rallies and singled out whole ethnic groups for special criticism.
Ioffe herself was on the receiving end of intense online anti-Semitism after she wrote a profile of Melania Trump.

In this age of misinformation, our work is needed like never before. We report on the news that matters most to American Jews, driven by truth, not ideology.
At a time when newsrooms are closing or cutting back, the Forward has removed its paywall. That means for the first time in our 126-year history, Forward journalism is free to everyone, everywhere. With an ongoing war, rising antisemitism, and a flood of disinformation that may affect the upcoming election, we believe that free and open access to Jewish journalism is imperative.
Readers like you make it all possible. Right now, we’re in the middle of our Passover Pledge Drive and we still need 300 people to step up and make a gift to sustain our trustworthy, independent journalism.
Make a gift of any size and become a Forward member today. You’ll support our mission to tell the American Jewish story fully and fairly.
