RefuseFascism.org, the anti-Trump organization that has been active since the election, has smeared Ben Shapiro as a “white supremacist” and “fascist thug” ahead of the right-wing pundit’s speech at U.C. Berkeley scheduled for later this month.
“Fascist thug & white supremacist Ben Shapiro is coming to UC Berkeley – The issue is not ‘Free Speech.’ The Issue is Fascism,” wrote the organization in a Saturday Facebook post. The post called to block Shapiro’s speech, declaring, “campuses must become fascist-free zones.”
Shapiro, editor of The Daily Wire, is an Orthodox Jew who has frequently denounced white supremacists and other members of the so-called “alt-right.” According to studies from the Anti-Defamation League, Shapiro received the most anti-Semitic harassment on Twitter during last year’s campaign season.
He has faced raucous protest from left-wing groups during prior appearances on other university campuses.

This is a moment of great uncertainty for the news media, for the Jewish people, and for our sacred democracy. It is a time of confusion and declining trust in public institutions. An era in which we need humans to report facts, conduct investigations that hold power to account, tell stories that matter and share honest discourse on all that divides us.
With no paywall or subscriptions, the Forward is entirely supported by readers like you. Every dollar you give is invested in the future of the Forward — and telling the American Jewish story fully and fairly.
The Forward doesn’t rely on funding from institutions like governments or your local Jewish federation. There are thousands of readers like you who give us $18 or $36 or $100 each month or year.
