Gourmet Gift Guide — Top 10 Cookbooks Of 2017

Graphic by Angelie Zaslavsky
Compiling a list of the best Jewish cookbooks of any given year can be a difficult task. While some books wear their Judaism right on their spines — by having the word “Jewish” in the title, for example, or by being specifically about Jewish food — others are less obvious. Having a Jewish author doesn’t necessarily guarantee entry into the category, as when the food isn’t specifically Jewish, but sometimes we do include such books because there’s what we consider a Jewish sensibility, or because the author is a star in the wider culinary world and we’re shepping nachas (Yiddish for taking pride). So here, in order of publication date, is a list of our favorite Jewish and Jew-ish cookbooks of 2017. There’s undoubtedly something for every cookbook lover on your Hanukkah gift list.

This is a moment of great uncertainty for the news media, for the Jewish people, and for our sacred democracy. It is a time of confusion and declining trust in public institutions. An era in which we need humans to report facts, conduct investigations that hold power to account, tell stories that matter and share honest discourse on all that divides us.
With no paywall or subscriptions, the Forward is entirely supported by readers like you. Every dollar you give this Passover is invested in the future of the Forward — and telling the American Jewish story fully and fairly.
The Forward doesn’t rely on funding from institutions like governments or your local Jewish federation. There are thousands of readers like you who give us $18 or $36 or $100 each month or year.
