Vetting for 2012: With less than a week to go until midterms, it’s safe to say the 2012 presidential race is warming up. The Democratic National Committee has already approached the Pentagon to learn about potential Republican opponents—part of its early stage opposition research. According to ABC News, The DNC has filed Freedom of Information Act requests with the Defense Department for any communications between military agencies and nine potential 2012 Republican presidential candidates: former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin; former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney; Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi; Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty; former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich; South Dakota Senator John Thune; Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana; and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. How many of us remember that Linda Lingle, a proud member of the tribe, is governor of Hawaii? (And if that is not exotic enough — she is also a Republican.)
These Days, Is Anything Safe?: With three weeks left to this campaign season, it’s looking like seats considered safe by Democrats are getting risky: “As Republicans made new investments in at least 10 races across the country, including two Democratic seats here in eastern Ohio, Democratic leaders took steps to pull out of some races entirely or significantly cut their financial commitment in several districts that the party won in the last two election cycles,” the Times reports. Florida Heat: According to Politico’s Alexander Burns, Gov. Charlie Crist, running in Florida’s senatorial contest as an independent, is about to get “the full Arlen Specter treatment” as the state’s Democratic party supports an ad from Democratic opponent Kendrick Meek that points to Crist’s Republican — no less, his “Jeb Bush Republican” — past. It includes footage of Crist praising Sen. John McCain for choosing Sarah Palin as his 2008 running mate. (Politico)
-It’s not always sunny in Florida for independent senatorial candidate Charlie Crist. The state’s Republican party released an audit showing that Florida Governor Crist — until recently a Republican — charged to the party over $381,000 expenses not “primarily” related to official party work, including a trip to … Disney World. (Florida Times-Union)
-In a conference call yesterday, Crist’s Democratic opponent, Rep. Kendrick Meek, appealed to Jewish voters by pointing to support from Jewish groups and his distance from the Obama administration on Israel. But his debate will be aired tonight, on Yom Kippur. (MitzVote).
