Guests in our Sukkah
When Daniel Treiman, the Forward’s opinion editor, asked for a leave of absence for a couple of months this fall, we decided to mix things up on our Forum page. In a season when it’s traditional to invite guests into a sukkah, why not invite guests to edit our pages?
So starting today, an illustrious group of journalists, academics and thinkers will take turns as guest editors on part or all of the Forum page. The aim is to bring new voices to our conversation, to challenge ourselves and our readers, and create lively, provocative journalism.
Our first guest editor is Eric Alterman, a columnist for The Nation and Moment magazine, author of seven books, and professor of English and journalism at CUNY. The others are equally distinguished:
Sam Apple, editor-in-chief of The Faster Times, and author of two books including “American Parent,” published last year.
Rachel Sklar, media critic and editor-at-large for Mediaite.com, and my co-host on the Jewish Channel’s Salon television show.
Michael Berenbaum, Holocaust scholar and museum consultant, author of many books, and Forward contributing editor.
Morris Vogel, president of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum historian and former dean at Temple University.
Samuel G. Freedman, professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and columnist for the New York Times.
Letty Cottin Pogrebin, founding editor of Ms. Magazine, and a leading figure in American feminism.
Judith Shulevitz, prolific writer whose book “Sabbath World: Glimpses of a Different Order of Time” was published this year.
I also call your attention to two blogs recently launched on our website focused on the things Jews love to do: talk politics and eat.
Turn to MitzVote for everything you need to know about Jews and politics in this heated campaign season. Along with smart, newsy commentary, there are in-depth analyses of the races where Jewish candidates and Jewish voters are playing key roles.
Turn to the Jew and the Carrot, a partnership with Hazon, for a delicious array of features, recipes and debate on contemporary issues about food in Jewish life.
Chag sameach.
The Forward is free to read, but it isn’t free to produce

I hope you appreciated this article. Before you go, I’d like to ask you to please support the Forward.
Now more than ever, American Jews need independent news they can trust, with reporting driven by truth, not ideology. We serve you, not any ideological agenda.
At a time when other newsrooms are closing or cutting back, the Forward has removed its paywall and invested additional resources to report on the ground from Israel and around the U.S. on the impact of the war, rising antisemitism and polarized discourse.
This is a great time to support independent Jewish journalism you rely on. Make a gift today!
