Woody Allen Likes Bernie Sanders But Endorses Hillary Clinton

Woody Allen, for the first time in recent memory, took a tentative step outside of the bubble of stereotypical white maleness to express support for Hillary Clinton in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote his forthcoming film “Café Society.”

“I’m a Hillary fan,” he said, “I like Bernie very much. I think what he espouses is wonderful. But I think Hillary will get more done of what Bernie would like than Bernie could get done.”

Well, maybe not so grand a gesture after all, seeing as his endorsement was framed entirely in terms of Bernie Sanders’s goals and ideals. (Newsflash: Clinton’s purpose as a presidential candidate is not, in fact, to be Sanders’ policy-implementing helpmeet.)

To be fair, in the same interview Allen responded to a question on how his wife, Soon-Yi, has changed him by saying “she was picked up and put in an orphanage…I’ve been able to really make her life better.” What better, in the end, could we expect?

Are you one of our 2%?

Did you know that only 2% of Forward readers donate to support our nonprofit newsroom? That 2% make it possible for millions to read the Forward without a paywall or subscription — removing any barriers to the full and fair Jewish story.

But while the Forward is free to read, it isn’t free to produce. Big stories — like deep dives into the antisemitism data, political scoops or reporting trips to college campuses  —  take months of research and fact-checking. All while we keep you informed of what you need to know each day.

Don’t just read the Forward — invest in it. Support our work today!
