5 San Diego Students Win Sukkah Design Prize

Five students from the NewSchool of Architecture and Design in San Diego were awarded first place in the 2013 Sukkah Design Expo, the university said in a statement.

The winning design, which was chosen by public vote, features sustainable materials such as repurposed wood pallets with verses carved into them. The students also provided paint and brushes to visitors to allow them to decorate the outside of the Sukkah.

The structure was built on a 67-acre agricultural property in north San Diego county, the NewSchool said in its release.

The team received an $1,800 cash prize.

The Expo is sponsored by the Leichtag Foundation, a grant-making group based out of Carlsbad, Calif. Foundation spokeswoman Noami Rabkin said the design won praise particularly for its “creative design concept, and thoughtful and comprehensive explanation and renderings.”

Are you one of our 2%?

Did you know that only 2% of Forward readers donate to support our nonprofit newsroom? That 2% make it possible for millions to read the Forward without a paywall or subscription — removing any barriers to the full and fair Jewish story.

But while the Forward is free to read, it isn’t free to produce. Big stories — like deep dives into the antisemitism data, political scoops or reporting trips to college campuses  —  take months of research and fact-checking. All while we keep you informed of what you need to know each day.

Don’t just read the Forward — invest in it. Support our work today!
