Abbas Improving After Third Hospitalization In A Week

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas reportedly was improving after being hospitalized for the third time in a week.

Abbas, 83, was admitted to the Istishari Arab Hospital near Ramallah in the West Bank on Sunday with a high fever and other complications following an ear operation a week ago.

He reportedly received intravenous antibiotics. On Monday he was conscious and communicating with those around him, according to Israeli news reports citing senior Palestinian officials.

Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, told the Palestinian WAFA news agency that Abbas would be discharged by Tuesday.

Abbas has been president of the PA since 2005.
