SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Top White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow, a staunch defender of President Donald Trump’s tough stance on global trade, was in good condition in a Washington-area hospital after suffering a heart attack, the White House said on Tuesday.
Trump announced Kudlow’s heart attack in a tweet sent minutes before he met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.
“Our Great Larry Kudlow, who has been working so hard on trade and the economy, has just suffered a heart attack. He is now in Walter Reed Medical Center,” Trump said.
Later, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, who was traveling with the president, issued a statement that said Kudlow’s doctors said he had a “very mild heart attack”.
“Larry is currently in good condition … and his doctors expect he will make a full and speedy recovery,” she said.
The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is in suburban Maryland.
A longtime television commentator, Kudlow, 70, was hired by Trump in March to replace Gary Cohn as director of the National Economic Council.
Kudlow joined the president at the Group of Seven summit in Quebec on Friday and Saturday. He did several media interviews on Sunday to vigorously defend Trump amid a trade spat between the president and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
