Obama Addresses the School-Kids

Graphic by Angelie Zaslavsky
Republicans are mighty pissed
At Washington’s chief “socialist”
Who spoke to students nationwide.
“Subversive bilge!” these critics cried.
Barack displayed both guile and gall
By urging pupils, one and all,
To study hard, their teachers heed,
In order to in life succeed.
Shocked parents, charging that high marks
Were clear inventions of Karl Marx,
Discerned Obama’s sly intent,
And spotted what he “really” meant.
Accordingly it made good sense
To shield their children’s innocence
By keeping them at home that day,
So’s not to his smooth talk fall prey.
Demanding that his speech be quashed,
They didn’t want their kids brain-washed.
How dare he preach a concept vile
Deceptively, with guile and smile?
It seems that in advance they knew
The line to which the prez would hew.
Let’s not such silliness prolong!
Those on the right are often wrong!
Why I became the Forward’s editor-in-chief
You are surely a friend of the Forward if you’re reading this. And so it’s with excitement and awe — of all that the Forward is, was, and will be — that I introduce myself to you as the Forward’s newest editor-in-chief.
And what a time to step into the leadership of this storied Jewish institution! For 129 years, the Forward has shaped and told the American Jewish story. I’m stepping in at an intense time for Jews the world over. We urgently need the Forward’s courageous, unflinching journalism — not only as a source of reliable information, but to provide inspiration, healing and hope.
